Alcoutim

With 577 km² and ~4,000 inhabitants, Alcoutim is the less populated county and the most aged population in the Algarve.

A county with an economy mainly turned to agriculture, pottery, weaving, honey, etc., has fallen into decline due to the lack of adaptation to the competitive economic reality of modern days.

Formerly part of the province of Alentejo, with the administrative division established in 1832, became part of the Algarve region.
It is different cultural world from other municipalities of the Algarve. Traditions and experiences are culturally Alentejanas, seems another reality of Algarve.

The village of Alcoutim is set apart from Spain by a mere 100 mt. of the Guadiana river and on the opposite bank lies the Spanish village of 'Sanlúcar de Guadiana' who much is compared with Alcoutim.

The Village of Alcoutim, has only 900 inhabitants and was a important Spanish vigil border point. Proof of it, is the Alcoutim castle that faces the Spanish castle on the other bank of the Guadiana river. Both castles were an affront and security for both sides and to the river navigation.

A visit to the municipality of Alcoutim, is a rewarding experience.
