Tavira

The Council of Tavira is the third largest in the Algarve with 612 km² and 24.500 inhabitants mostly concentrated in urban coastal area.

The council has more than 100 small villages in the interior, which are mainly occupied by elderly due to desertification, still, retaining the charm and traditional beauty in a unique landscape.

The town of Tavira is considered as the most beautiful of the Algarve, much due to the conservation of local architecture with traces left by all cultures that occupied the region. It is worth mentioning the Roman bridge, the 27 churches, Tavira Castle shrouded in many legends, etc ...

During the Muslim occupation, Tavira was a successful commercial port, exporting salt fish, nuts, salt, wine, honey and much more to Mediterranean destinations in Europe and Africa.

Note that Tavira is still considered the cultural capital of the Algarve, not only thanks to existing monuments as to the events held in the cultural sphere.

The coast of Tavira is surrounded by the Natural Park of Ria Formosa and the Tavira Island, accessible only by ferry, it is a unique beach in the Algarve.
